Go Green!

One of the things I truly love about Japan is the widespread use of bikes as daily transportation. At some point in history we unfortunately became addicted to the overuse of automobiles. Other than major city messengers who use their bike as a part of their profession, we (the majority) use bicycles for recreation or exercise. While there is nothing in the slightest way wrong with this, I must say it is really cool to see on any give day thousands of women in dresses/jeans rocking heels, men in suits with brief cases and pint size children going to and from school, navigate effortlessly through the bustling, clustered streets of Japan. Even when it's raining some people have an attachment specifically made for holding an umbrella. The US, Japan and every other part of the world need to make a concerted effort to do much more in our environmental efforts to sustain this wonderful planet. You can start being green by riding a bike. Make it a habitual unconscious part of your daily life. Make the extra time to travel by bike to work, to your local farmer's market, or an evening out with friends. Here are a few pics of the thousands of bikes I saw on my ventures in Japan. The last is my newly acquired design your own fixie from Big Shot. Another cool website that my wife designed her bike at was from Republic. Choose your lifestyle, but more importantly, choose to help make a difference. NEAL.

bikes are cool, Neal! I'm being green being on foot most of the time though....with my two children. Living in Japan one starts understanding how much dangerous bikes (must say people riding bikes) are. There are no traffic rules for bycicles here, there no special lanes for bikes either. You can also see moms bringing their kids here and there by bike, and you'd be amazed - there can be 3 kids together with mom on ONE bike: one in the front, one in the back, and one behind mom's sholders like a backpack...may be eco friendly...but not child friendly, I'm afraid. I see lots of young people on their bikes with MP3-MP4 players, DSs, mailing from their phones as they go...and God knows how many of them lose their health or even lives like this...One of our friend's 4 year old daughter was hit by one guy who didn't pay attention...I see these dangerous situations every day, even this morning my husband was taking me to work and mommy on the bike flew out from behing the corner into the street with a little daughter not even looking at the cars...well...she must have been in a hurry...thanks to my husbands driving skills...I must say some Japanese people have remarkable riding skills, children are "born on the bikes" we say:)...but it breaks my heart to hear almost every day hearing about children hurt by sorry riders, or getting in trouble riding themselves being just not ready to react quick or handle their bikes well... I love bikes...I love children more:)...so I walk pushing my son's stroller and my daughter walks with me...watching out for the bycicles...of course...

I second THAT! come visit AMSTERDAM and you know what i'm talking about... bikes RULE. nice topic!

Completely agree, time to prioritize

Thanks Deborah!

what u sayin is the truth man...will make every effort 2 do my part.. bikes are hott!!
